"Not all those who wander are lost", so the famous quote goes. As I was packing my bags (my trusted leather handbag and one suitcase filled with long dresses and gorgeous accessories by Pinwheel Jewels), I was having mixed emotions - I was a bit excited and more scared. It was my first time to travel alone and I was really hesitant to do it. I am absolutely clueless about road signs, I can't read maps and I always get lost so the idea of travelling alone doesn't appeal to me.
I arrive at 12 MN last Sunday and immediately went to the hotel. I stayed in Legian, the nightlife capital of Bali, for the first four nights. The first night was horrible cause there are no toiletries in my room so I had to go out to the nearest convenience store and buy some. As I went out of the hotel, there were at least five men who were insisting that I try magic mushroom (I didn't have any idea what was it) and kept on walking beside me. I went back to the hotel feeling scared, locked the door and slept with the TV and lights on.
I woke up so early the next morning and was so happy to see the sun shining. My plan was to go immediately to the beach and have a sun tanning session but I got distracted by the spas alongside my hotel so I gave in and went inside. Would you believe manicure, pedicure and foot scrub cost me S$20 only? In Singapore, basic mani-pedi can cost you S$100 so you can feel my happiness when I went inside and found out that everything is super cheap!
What I love most about Bali is the environment - everyone is warm and friendly, the weather is nice, everything is cheap, you can go clubbing in your shorts, singlets and flats, the beach is just a 10-min walk away, I can go suntanning the whole day in my two-piece bikini and wide brim hat, relaxing by the beach with Bintang on my left hand and iPhone (taking thousands of photos) on my right.
What I learned is that travelling alone can be really satisfying and rewarding. I met a lot of people (which I still talk to even now when I got back in Singapore) and discovered new things about myself. Locals thought I was one of them so they always approach me and talk to me in their own language, I approach random people in the hotel just so I have people to talk to, and I get approached in the beach by tourists and get asked to take photos with them which is cool. The experience is amazing! Being a shopaholic that I am, I had this thinking that I'd rather spend my money on shopping than travelling but now, I wanna travel often (if I have to be alone, that will be fantastic too) and immerse in the local culture, meet new people and experience a whole new environment.
With the huge waves in Kuta Beach, white sand and serene blue sea in Pandawa Beach and the amazing view of Bali all in all, I got Instagram-crazy and posted over 30 photos in a span of 6 days! So here's a post of my Instagram diary showing the beauty of Bali. I'd like to thank Pinwheel Jewels for the accessories that I used in my recent trip. Everything is super gorgeous!
